Feds spend on ferry service
Marine Atlantic gets $22 million for moorings in federal budget
The first budget from the Trudeau government included a bit of funding for Marine Atlantic.
The Crown corporation will receive $22 million as part of a federal infrastructure initiative.
Marine Atlantic spokesman Darrell Mercer said the funding will be split between three projects, the largest being a new mooring system in North Sydney and Port aux Basques. The other projects will include fendering upgrades in both ports and replacing the storm sewer in Port aux Basques.
The government also announced $51.9 million in financial support for ferries in Atlantic Canada.
The Canadian Ferry Operators Association praised the commitment. In a press release, the association’s CEO said the funds will have a “real impact” on ferry passengers.
“Through various measures, the federal government is helping the 55 million passengers that use ferries every year,” Serge Buy said in the release.
