Port aux Basques council briefs
New street name
A side road off Brook Street in Port aux Basques will receive a new name.
Town council passed a motion to name the road Brookside Lane.
The change came after residents requested a name for the street.
Town manager Barry Spencer said residents wouldn’t need to change their deeds if the town made the change.
Brookside Lane had been previously suggested as a name for the road.
The public works committee recommended the town no longer clear private lanes or right of ways after snowfall.
Town manager Barry Spencer said the committee felt many of the lanes were more driveways than streets.
Spencer said the town doesn’t own these lanes and doesn’t maintain.
“Some have been plowed to some extent,” Spencer said. “Some, we’ve had requests that they be plowed.”
Coun. Justin Blackler said the only way to ensure things were fair was to stop altogether.
Coun. Bruce Burton said because of past practice, there may be some complaints when the first snowfall comes.
Digital sign repairs
The age of the digital sign for the Bruce II at the corner of Grand Bay Road and High Street is making it difficult to find new parts.
A report from the recreation committee indicated a company called Media Resources may have the parts needed to repair the sign.
If the cost of repairs is too high, the committee suggested it may be time to either look into a new sign or removing it altogether.
