Bike for Brooke
4-year-old with cerebral palsy the recipient of local generosity
A family from Burgeo is overwhelmed with the support received from a recent fundraiser for their four-year-old daughter.
Chris and Tina Durnford were caught off guard when local resident Bonnie Anderson approached them with the idea of a fundraiser, to get their daughter Brooke a therapeutic bicycle.
Brooke has cerebral palsy. She makes many trips to the Janeway Children’s Hospital in St. John’s. Chris explained that after her therapy sessions, she is allowed to use the therapeutic bicycle.
He had posted a video of her using the bike to Facebook, and that’s where everyone saw just how happy the bike made her, including Anderson.
Within a matter of days, local businesses and residents pulled together and raised over $3,000 for the cost of the bike.
“The communities around here are unbelievable,” said Chris. “Brooke is really excited to get her bike, it’s one of her favourite things to do.”
The bike has already been ordered, along with some accessories such as a helmet, and should arrive in Burgeo by the end of November.
Any left over funds will be donated to a trust for Brooke.
Anderson, who works at the local pharmacy, said seeing the smile on Brooke’s face — and the determination of the young girl – was the reason in wanting to hold the fundraiser.
“This will give her freedom, and she is very deserving of it,” said Anderson.
Castle Building Supplies in Corner Brook donated $1,000 towards the project, and Anderson’s employer at Burgeo Pharmacy had no issues with putting up a poster and a donation can at the store.
Anderson said the poster went up on a Friday and shared through Facebook, and by the following Wednesday she had to take it down and ask people to stop donating, as they had reached their goal.
“People went above and beyond,” she said. “I still don’t have the exact total as there is still cash to be counted, cards for Brooke and email transfers to accept.”
Anderson was overwhelmed as well with the “amazing” support from people on this project.
Brooke Durnford will be receiving a new bike, thanks to the generosity of Burgeo and surrounding area residents.
