Meet the winner of the Port aux Basques Lions Club SpeakOut.
It was her first time participating in the Port aux Basques Lions Club speak-out and some nervousness was evident as Kayla Warren talked about STEM opportunities for rural youth.
The nervousness abated, however, as her passion for the subject became evident and Kayla handled, with confidence and ease, the follow-up from questioners Bruce Burton and Don Payne.
Kayla was chosen the winner of the Feb. 28 event by judges Betty Goodyear, Wendy Osmond and Cathy Woodman.
Unaccustomed to public speaking, the St. James High School senior decided to enter the event as practice for another event in May
“I was chosen valedictorian,” Kayla explained, “so I wanted to get in some practice.”
Having won the local tournament, Kayla will get at least one more chance to practice when she represents Port-aux-Basques in the regional tournament in Stephenville on March 26.
Should she prove triumphant once again, Kayla would participate in the Lions District tournament in Port-aux-Basques later this year. The winner of that contest will move on to participate in the multiple district tournament in New Brunswick, featuring winners of Lions Speak-out from all Atlantic provinces.
Lions International Speak-out winner Kayla Warren accepted her plaque from Doreen Warren, the official timer, at the Lions Club in Port aux Basques.
