Port aux Basque girls claim bronze at provincials
Saints bring home medals for second weekend in a row
It was another weekend of success on the court for Saints girls volleyball team Feb. 24 and 25.
The Port aux Basques team earned another medal at provincial competition, this time in the Girls Under-18 tournament in Grand Falls-Windsor. The tournament featured 27 teams from across the province.
Thanks to two wins in the round robin — defeating a club team from central and a Grade 9 team from central — the Saints earned a spot in Tier 1 competition.
On day two of the tournament, Feb. 25, the Saints faced Mobile High and defeated them in two straight sets: 25-12 and 25-15.
Port aux Basques then faced a team from Lethbridge, Bonavista Bay. The Saints won the first set 25-16 but the Huskies came back to take the second and third sets.
This placed the Saints second, and on to a quarter-final march against their arch rivals, Pasadena.
It was the third time the teams have met this year. This time the Saints came away with the win, beating Pasadena 25-16 in the first set, and making a comeback from a 24-20 point gap to take the second set, and the match, with a nailbiting 26-24 victory.
In the semi-finals the Saints put up a good fight but lost to Cloud River, 25-23 and 25-17.
The Saints were still in medal contention, however. And in the bronze medal game against Prince of Wales Collegiate from St. John’s, Port aux Basques earned the prize in two sets, with scores of 25-16 and 25-17.
