Rumours run rampant after attempted murder charges dropped; alleged victim charged
PORT AUX BASQUES, NL – In the span of four days, Thomas Kavanagh was charged with attempted murder and then released with all charges dropped.
According to an RCMP statement, the 54- year- old Deer Lake resident was initially charged with stabbing a 39-year-old Port aux Basques resident around 10 p. m. on Wednesday, July 12.
By Sunday, July 15 RCMP were searching the site of the alleged attack, located in the East End Channel area of town in an overgrown field near Shark Cove Suites. By Monday, July 17 Kavanagh was released from custody, the Crown having withdrawn all charges against him.
The initial complainant was subsequently charged with mischief. That same afternoon RCMP once again searched the field, this time using a metal detector.
The investigation into what actually took place is ongoing.
A handler and his dog searched a field not far from Shark Cove Suites on Sunday, July 16.
RCMP searched the same field again using a metal detector on Monday, July 17.
