Bruce II Sports Centre marks water safety
PORT AUX BASQUES, NL — Last week was National Drowning Prevention Week and Wednesday, July 19 was Lifeguard Appreciation Day.
On July 18 the Lifesaving Society’s Swim To Survive Program took place, with approximately 50 participants receiving their certificates.
Participants had to successfully roll, with or without personal floatation devices (PFDs), into deep water, tread water for one minute and then swim 50 metres.
On Lifeguard Appreciate Day, Port aux Basques Mayor Todd Strickland came by the Bruce II Sports Complex with some councillors and skipper Andy Francis of Port aux Basques Excursions was also present to show his support for wearing PFDs in boats.
A proclamation was signed to mark the week and the day.
Around 50 children received water Swim to Survive Program certificates at the Bruce II Sports Complex last week.
