Bruce II Sports Cen­tre marks wa­ter safety

PORT AUX BASQUES, NL — Last week was Na­tional Drown­ing Preven­tion Week and Wed­nes­day, July 19 was Life­guard Ap­pre­ci­a­tion Day.

On July 18 the Life­sav­ing So­ci­ety’s Swim To Sur­vive Pro­gram took place, with ap­prox­i­mately 50 par­tic­i­pants re­ceiv­ing their cer­tifi­cates.

Par­tic­i­pants had to suc­cess­fully roll, with or with­out per­sonal floata­tion de­vices (PFDs), into deep wa­ter, tread wa­ter for one minute and then swim 50 me­tres.

On Life­guard Ap­pre­ci­ate Day, Port aux Basques Mayor Todd Strick­land came by the Bruce II Sports Com­plex with some coun­cil­lors and skip­per Andy Fran­cis of Port aux Basques Ex­cur­sions was also present to show his sup­port for wear­ing PFDs in boats.

A procla­ma­tion was signed to mark the week and the day.


Around 50 chil­dren re­ceived wa­ter Swim to Sur­vive Pro­gram cer­tifi­cates at the Bruce II Sports Com­plex last week.
