Burgeo 8-Step Water Plan
The Town of Burgeo’s 8-step operational water plan was adopted at the May 17 council meeting.
Step 1: Installation and monitoring of four water meters in households with appropriate spacing.
Step 2: All curb stops to remain visible, accessible and clearly marked for town operations at the cost of the resident.
Step 3: Town workers to check main lines for leaks on an ongoing basis and fix as soon as possible. Staff will also isolate sections of town and measure flow rates.
Step 4: Vacant homes still running water will have their owners notified that the town will shut off curb stops.
Step 5: Homes vacant for longer than four weeks to be registered at the town office as having had water shut off. If water is left running, curb stops will be shut off by the town and homeowners will have to pay a fee to have the water turned back on.
Step 6: Town to provide information on how to conserve water through BBS, household flyers and council reports.
Step 7: Rather than put in mandated meters, which would bring expense to residents, town will hire a part-time monitor to work with residents to check flow, educate them as to acceptable levels. Residents who run their water but don’t want to work with a monitor will have a water meter installed at their expense.
Step 8: New homes will not be permitted to occupy until water and sewer lines are inspected and approved by the town. This must be inspected and signed off by town staff before the line is covered.
