Win a well-deserved silver medal.
The St. James senior girls’ volleyball team from Port aux Basques attended its second tournament of the year in Gander recently, with 24 teams participating in the Female B division.
On Nov. 3 the team played Pearson High from New Wes Valley. The girls played very well and won the first set 25-22. In the second set New Wes Valley came out strong and defeated Port aux Basques 25-17.
In the third set the girls responded with a 15- 8 victory. In the second match, St. James played a B team from Gander Collegiate and won 25-18 and 25- 18, placing them in tier one.
On Nov. 4 there was a second round-robin of first-place teams but only two teams advanced to the playoffs from each section.
First up was Leo Burke Academy from Bishop’s Falls, the same team Port aux Basques defeated last year at the 17U provincial championships 16-14 in the third set to win gold.
Both sets were a battle, but the girls wanted to win and defeated Leo Burke 25-18 and 25-22.
Next up was St. Mark’s from Kings Cove. The girls came out flying and won 25-9 and 25-18, giving them first place for the division.
Into the quarterfinal St. James had their hands full going against King Academy from Harbour Breton. In the first set they were down 19-13 and came back to win 25-23. The next set was the same and Port aux Basques pulled off a 25- 20 victory.
In the semifinal St. James was up against Jane Collins Academy from Hare Bay. In the first set St. James was ahead and never looked back from a 25-16 win; but the girls made lots of errors and were hammered 25-11.
In the third set St. James came out flying and won 15-6. This set up a match with Cloud River. In the first set St. James had a 10-point lead but gave it up and lost 25-20.
In the second set the points see- sawed back and forth and with a few great plays, St. James won 25- 23. In the third set Port aux Basques held on tough but lost 15-10 to claim the silver for some of the best sets and matches the girls have ever played.
