Wal­ter Os­tanek wins $1M in lot­tery

Canada’s polka king, Wal­ter Os­tanek, won $1 mil­lion in the Lon­don Dream Lot­tery prize.

The 81-year-old St. Catharines mu­si­cian has earned three Grammy awards and is known for ac­cor­dion hits such as “Beer Bar­rel Polka” and “Smile Awhile Polka.”

He can now add jack­pot win­ner to his list of achieve­ments.

The Dream Lot­tery raises money for pa­tient care, re­search and med­i­cal equip­ment at Chil­dren’s Health Foun­da­tion, Lon­don Health Sci­ences Foun­da­tion and St. Joseph’s Health Care Foun­da­tion.

Os­tanek’s grand prize ticket en­ti­tled him to take pos­ses­sion of a new home, but he opted to take the cash.
