Canada targets 19 medals, top-12 finish at Rio Games

Canada has set a target of winning at least 19 medals at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

That would be one more than the 18 won at the 2012 Games in London, which included one gold, five silver and 12 bronze medals. Canada has also set a goal of finishing in the top 12 in the world in medals standings.

Own the Podium CEO Anne Merklinger said Canada’s best medal hopes going into the Games are in athletics, cycling, swimming, diving and wrestling. Other sports with strong medal potential include boxing, golf, tennis and beach volleyball.

Canada is confident it can reach its goals based on an increasing number of athletes posting top performances at world championships and other events leading up to the Games. Both the Canadian Olympic Association and Own The Podium have increased spending in a bid to boost the medal count.
