Eating disorders prevalent among LBG youth: study

The Hamilton Spectator - - CANADA & WORLD -

A University of British Columbia study says gay, lesbian and bisexual youth are continuing to purge, fast and take diet pills or laxatives to lose weight while the rates for such behaviour among heterosexuals are going down. Research involving 26,000 students in Massachusetts suggests lesbian and bisexual girls are even worse off than their male counterparts, and the results are the same as a larger and yet-to-be published British Columbia survey. Lead researcher Ryan Watson, a post-doctoral fellow at the university’s school of nursing, says healthy eating programs that seem to be working for straight youth haven’t reached lesbian, gay and bisexual kids.
