RE: Spectator’s 170th anniversary
The two page spread on The Spec’s 170 years — I played a small role in it as a reporter there from 1969 to 1975 — was interesting, to be sure. Nice to know about Smiley, the founder, but I found it strange there was not one word about the Southam family, which owned the Spec for most of its existence.
Indeed, The Spec was the flagship of the Southam chain that at one point included dailies from Windsor, Ontario to Vancouver, B.C.
But perhaps that’s a Part 2 story yet to run ... Ron Dennis, Burlington
