How you can help refugees

RE: Refugee crisis

The Hamilton Spectator - - OPINION -

Back in the 1970s, Tom Petty sang, “Somewhere somehow somebody must have kicked you around some ... like a Refugee.”

Forty years later, our world has a refugee crisis and Petty’s poetry can help us. Refugees have been displaced by wars, civil unrest, natural disasters, droughts, climate change, political and sexual discrimination and poverty.

Canada should be proud of its refugee record and for the fast-tracking over 25,000 Syrian war refugees in the past eight months. Our politicians can do much more. For example, what if every elected politician at the provincial and federal level took a refugee family into their house for as long as that politician is in office? If our politicians did this, then the rich citizens of this country may also choose to sponsor one. Canadian families with yearly household incomes of only $30,000 or less have been helping refugees. All Canadians can help. G. Rooney Hamilton
