City bullying theatre owner

RE: Fight to save a sacred space (Jan. 19)

The Hamilton Spectator - - OPINION -

The city of Hamilton and, in particular, Coun. Aidan Johnson are bullying the Westdale theatre owner who is essentially powerless against a heritage designation if approved. The value of the property will drop significantly if a new owner can’t use the building for its best use, which is NOT a one-room theatre. No buyer would buy the theatre at its current market value with that threat hanging over the building.

If the city is so concerned with keeping a theatre which the public doesn’t support in numbers that can make the theatre viable, then the city should be forced to expropriate the theatre at market value and then they can run the theatre. Seems like people come out of the woodwork when these things happen but where have you been the last decade? Apparently not buying tickets. My advice to city council is to put your money where your mouth is, or get out of the way. Todd Leggat, Hamilton
