Fire marshal probes Bay Street South house fire

The Hamilton Spectator - - LOCAL -

The office of the Ontario Fire Marshal has been dispatched to investigate a fire Saturday night in a multirental-unit home at 228 Bay St. S.

Hamilton firefighters entered through the front door of the twoand-a-half storey, stately-looking century home just after 10:30 p.m. Saturday. They punched holes in the roof to ventilate the building and quickly knocked down the fire in one of the seven rental units.

Residents exited the house and no one was injured. Damage is estimated at $10,000.

Hamilton Fire Department spokesperson Claudio Mostacci could not comment further on what was burning or the cause of the fire.

Mostacci said it was a busy night for Hamilton firefighters: 15 minutes prior to the Bay Street call, crews fought an intense fire in a storage building near a farmhouse at 2574 Kirk Rd. in Glanbrook.

Crews were on site until about 2 a.m. Volunteer firefighters assisted as well. Damage is estimated at about $150,000. Nobody was injured, and the house itself was not damaged.
