GM should pay for its own lights

RE: Horizon presents GM cheque for lighting retrofit (Jan. 27)

Am I missing the point of “cap and trade”? The taxpayers are giving General Motors $476,000 to replace interior bay lights in order to save electricity. As an ethical and concerned company, why would General Motors not do this on its own to lower its electrical bills and save the environment? We are asked to do this in our own homes and pay for the expense ourselves. Why can’t General Motors take this out of its expenses that would then be deductible from profit? We are so gullible!
