Let’s welcome those rejected by the U.S.

The Hamilton Spectator - - OPINION - RE: Refugee policy

As a Canadian millennial, I have been feeling overwhelmed about everything going on in the United States. I know that I am not alone.

Recently, Justin Trudeau took to Twitter to reassure Canadians that we will welcome refugees with open arms. This is an exciting promise, but there is a problem: 2004’s Canadian-US Safe Third Country Agreement does not allow those who have been denied refugee status in the United States to come to Canada.

We, as Canadians can help. Canada is a wonderful place to live, and I love the reputation that we have. Now is the time for us to live up to the reputation. Let’s write our MPs and tell them that we to rescind the CanadianUS Safe Third Country Agreement. Abigail Duerksen, Hamilton
