Speed pos­si­ble fac­tor in fiery fa­tal crash

Driver and pas­sen­ger killed af­ter ve­hi­cle rolls over, smashes into guardrail and is con­sumed by flames on East­port Drive

TWO PEO­PLE ARE DEAD af­ter a sin­gle-ve­hi­cle col­li­sion on East­port Drive.

The crash, which took place just be­fore 6 a.m. Tues­day near Beach Boule­vard, in­volved a 2017 Lexus sedan, OPP spokesper­son Sgt. Kerry Sch­midt said on Twit­ter. It’s be­lieved the ve­hi­cle rolled over and hit the guardrail be­fore ig­nit­ing, he said.

“The ve­hi­cle was con­sumed by fire,” Sch­midt said, de­scrib­ing the scene early on as “a very tragic sit­u­a­tion.”

Early re­ports in­di­cate the ve­hi­cle may have been “trav­el­ling at a high rate of speed,” he said.

The ve­hi­cle was sent to the Cen­tre of Foren­sic Sci­ences with the two bod­ies in it, Sch­midt said, adding he did not ex­pect the bod­ies to be iden­ti­fied un­til later this week.

No de­tails on the driver or pas­sen­ger were re­leased Tues­day. Sch­midt said po­lice were work­ing on no­ti­fy­ing next of kin.

East­port Drive un­der the Sky­way was re­opened shortly be­fore 11 a.m. af­ter be­ing closed for sev­eral hours for in­ves­ti­ga­tion. Sch­midt said roads were dry at the time of the crash.


The Lexus sedan that crashed Tues­day on East­port Drive was sent to the Cen­tre of Foren­sic Sci­ences with the two bod­ies in it.
