Speed possible factor in fiery fatal crash
Driver and passenger killed after vehicle rolls over, smashes into guardrail and is consumed by flames on Eastport Drive
TWO PEOPLE ARE DEAD after a single-vehicle collision on Eastport Drive.
The crash, which took place just before 6 a.m. Tuesday near Beach Boulevard, involved a 2017 Lexus sedan, OPP spokesperson Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said on Twitter. It’s believed the vehicle rolled over and hit the guardrail before igniting, he said.
“The vehicle was consumed by fire,” Schmidt said, describing the scene early on as “a very tragic situation.”
Early reports indicate the vehicle may have been “travelling at a high rate of speed,” he said.
The vehicle was sent to the Centre of Forensic Sciences with the two bodies in it, Schmidt said, adding he did not expect the bodies to be identified until later this week.
No details on the driver or passenger were released Tuesday. Schmidt said police were working on notifying next of kin.
Eastport Drive under the Skyway was reopened shortly before 11 a.m. after being closed for several hours for investigation. Schmidt said roads were dry at the time of the crash.
