We must make the elderly a priority

RE: Resident beaten at St. Joseph’s Villa (Feb. 3)

The Hamilton Spectator - - OPINION -

I have two dear friends whose parents have also been attacked in local nursing homes; one at the Villa, the other at a f acility in Waterdown. It is an outrage that our most vulnerable members of society (and their families) have to live out their days in fear of their safety in the care of those we hope to be expert and compassionate caregivers. Considering the ridiculously high prices it costs for these facilities, could owners/operators not afford at least a security guard to patrol the halls while long-term plans are put in place? Goodness knows how long it will take our legions of bureaucrats to come up with a solution. We must make the elderly a priority NOW! I will never forget that poor man’s face. Kudos to the family for sharing their heartbreaking story. Now let’s do something to fix this. Connie Smith, Ancaster
