Three young teens arrested after ‘punk off’ robbery at mall
Three teenage boys who allegedly stole gold chains from three other boys were arrested Friday after a foot chase with police and security guards in Mapleview Mall.
The suspects, who are 13, 14 and 15, cannot be named under the Young Criminal Justice Act.
Halton Regional Police called the robbery a “punk off” — which is when youth corner victims and rob them using intimidation or threats of violence.
Just before 7:30 p.m. the three teens followed three other boys into the Apple Store in the mall and then into Sears, where the victims were ordered to hand over chains they wore.
One of the suspects allegedly “put his hand in front of his waistband causing the victims to believe he was armed,” police said.
After a brief chase, the suspects were caught and charged with two counts of robbery. One of them was held for bail, the other two released on a promise to appear in court.
