Time for school!

The Hamilton Spectator - - OUR PULSE -

I arrive at school each day and wait for staff to greet me on the bus. My friends come from all over Hamilton. Everyone is friendly and says “good morning” to me as I make my way to my locker and class.

When I get to class, I check my visual schedule to see what I am doing each day. Some students have a schedule that they touch because they have difficulty seeing the pictures. We have pretty busy days, but it is a lot of fun. I get right to work. I want to get my work done so I can choose a free choice activity. Some days I like to do art, music or fun activities on my iPad during this time. The teachers know the activities I like and they help me learn.

We have an awesome playground at school. My favourite activity is playing on the swings and the creative playground. Some of my friends run around the playground while others move around in their wheelchairs. Our playground is designed so that we can all have fun and be safe. I also like to visit my classmates and adult friends.

After recess, my class goes to the Glenwood Apartment where I learn how to do lots of fun things. Together we make delicious treats. I have learned how to vacuum, make a bed, sort laundry and care for plants.

When I go back to class, we often do music, interactive learning activities and games on the Smart Board. After lunch, it is time for gym. I like to play games like bowling or baseball with my friends. Some of the activities may look a little different, but they can be played by all my friends.

I always look forward to our weekly special events. Some of my favourite events have been Paint-to-Music, Space Fest and the day we made our own mini putt. Other days we have had special guests like Jenny the Librarian, students from McMaster and even Sharon and Bram, who came to sing for us last year! Oh, and I can’t forget Jesse. He is a beautiful Lab from Therapy Tails. He is my buddy!

Sometimes we go to the library to listen to stories or to the Discovery Room to explore sensory activities. My favourite place is the Snoezelen Room. It is a special place to relax and rest.

At the end of the day we pack up, say goodbye to my friends and get on the bus to go home. My bus driver is always happy to see me and likes to chat with those who meet me at the end of the ride.

I look forward to another busy day learning new skills, seeing my friends and having fun at Glenwood Special Day School.
