Stoney Creek tanning salon employees recognize man from previous holdups
A Stoney Creek man is facing charges in connection with several robberies over the past month.
Most recently, the man in his 30s allegedly tried to rob Sol’ exotica Tanning Spa at 952 Queenston Rd. on Feb. 15 around 5:30 p.m., police said.
Employees recognized the man from earlier robberies and locked the door as he approached, police said. The man, who was wearing dark clothing and had his face covered, tried to open the door but could not.
Detectives stopped the man and discovered he had a knife among other items, which were used in some previous robberies, police allege. Police noted other robberies: Gino’s Pizza, at 697 Queenston Rd. on Jan. 29: the man didn’t get any cash before running away from the store;
Sol’ exotica, at 952 Queenston Rd., on Feb. 4 and Feb. 7: the man made off with a small amount of money;
Queenslake Pharmacy, 910 Queenston Rd., on Feb. 9: the man tried to rob the pharmacy but ran away empty-handed;
Avondale Convenience, 205 Quigley Rd., on Feb. 9: the man stole an undisclosed amount of cash, police allege.
Ambrose Stoppa is charged with six counts of robbery, six counts of disguise with intent, and attempted robbery.
