Living wage cheaper in the long run

RE: Bishops: Living wage is a moral responsibility (Feb. 14)

On Valentine’s Day, The Spec published a joint declaration by two bishops to say they favour a minimum wage for all workers of $15.85 an hour. This, of course, seems difficult to attain — but it is urgent!

Research is showing that poverty and the social harm done by inadequate living conditions disrupt the basic human development of a brain and body. This means society ends up wounded, and made more expensive for us all — health, social services and other costs go higher, as always happens when society tries to ignore poverty. Basic wages are cheaper to us all than disadvantaging our low-income fellow citizens. Don Eustace, Hamilton
