If it was big, he was there

New series by Steve Milton begins Friday

The Hamilton Spectator - - SPORTS - He’s

been everywhere, man. Ever wonder what it would have been like to be inside some of the greatest sports stories of our times? To actually see it firsthand from behind the scenes, inside the ropes, from the dugouts and dressing rooms? Well, our Steve Milton has. OK, maybe not every major story over the past four decades, but a lot of them. How about being in Atlanta when the Toronto Blue Jays won their first World Series in 1992, or when Joe touched ’em all in 1993? He was there. He was the world’s go-to expert when the figure skating scandal surfaced at the Olympics in Salt Lake City and he was in the arena when Torvill and Dean skated to Bolero. As The Spectator’s senior sports columnist, Steve has been witness to all of these and dozens and dozens more, and we’ve asked him, with your urging, to go back and tell us again — this time from the inside out. Beginning Friday, Steve will begin a series of flashbacks that tell great stories from his inside perspective. What he saw and heard and how it felt to be there. So, how can you be a part of it? Just tell us about a famous sporting event since 1975 that you would like to experience again, and chances are, Steve was there and can tell you something new. Below are just a few of the amazing sporting events Steve has covered, and we’ll start things off with the 2004 Daytona 500 when Dale Earnhardt Jr. won for the first time at the world’s greatest stock car race. Yes, Steve was there. You can take it from there. Contact Steve at smilton@thespec.com or @miltonatthespec and let him take you back in time.
