Men’s winner Gunnar Holmgren crosses the finish line in the men’s 70-kilometre sector at the 24th annual Paris to Ancaster bicycle race. Cool and damp, and obviously a little muddy, it was a tough challenge for riders.

Some hilly territory is part of the challenge of the Paris to Ancaster race. Here, riders near the crest of a hill. At left , an exhausted-looking Aaron Schooler battles to keep going.

Kevin Simms, left, grinds it out as he nears the top of the very steep Old Martin Road Trail on his return to Ancaster.

Burrs cling to the racing tights of riders, along with plentiful helpings of mud, gravel and water.

The splatter of a hard fought grind for elite racer Noah Simms tells the tale.
