Liberals are buying the election

RE: Provincial budget

The Hamilton Spectator - - OPINION -

Just when you thought the Wynne Liberals couldn’t stoop any lower, they did. Knowing they may not prevail in the coming election based on their track record, they have set out to buy it. This latest very cynical budget is nothing more than targeted strategic vote buying. They will continue to borrow in order to throw bonbons to various special interest groups, cherry-picking winners and losers. The budget may be balanced momentarily, but only because of the one-time sale of capital assets, primarily Ontario Hydro.

And what will they NOT tell us this time. Remember, this government has given us the health care premium, the HST, and the selling of Ontario Hydro, without ever campaigning on those important issues, all the while warning us that it’s the other parties who have “hidden agendas.”

Clinging to power appears to supercede providing integrity-based governance and fiscal responsibility as Liberal priorities. Next year, voters should remember these Liberals for their actual past performance, and not be swayed by the apparent benevolence that only materializes prior to elections. Future generations of Ontarians, our children and theirs, will pay a steep price for the growing debt that currently costs nearly $12 billion in interest every year.

Come on, people, are we really this dumb, are we going to buy the Liberal bull and possibly re-elect them yet again? Kathleen Wynne is counting on it. God help us, please. Cameron Stringer, Hamilton
