St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton is expanding its youth wellness centre thanks to a $1-million donation from the Joyce Family Foundation.

The new space, located within the existing James Street South centre that opened two years ago, will be called The Joyce Link to honour the family’s contribution.

The St. Joe’s Youth Wellness Centre serves youth living with mental health and addiction challenges out of its downtown location. The expansion will mean enhanced services for youth and their families — in particular, young people who are moving from children’s mental health services to adult mental health services.

At Ron Joyce Children’s Health Centre, two penguin sculptures have been added to the courtyard, thanks to a gift from McKeil Marine. The four-foot figures, Grace and Anneke, are meant to be interactive and convey the importance of family and a supportive community. They are situated in a spot in the courtyard where clinical teams offer group and individual therapy sessions.

The announcement for both donations was timed to coincide with mental health week.
