MOE RESPONSE

The Hamilton Spectator - - BUSINESS -

Q. Are there any orders from the ministry with respect to coffining at Dofasco?

A. There was one Provincial Officer’s Order issued in 2008, however, the ministry replaced the order with a Site Specific Standard, which is a more effective way of getting the company to meet its requirements.

Q. Members of the citizens committee say that improvements were supposed to be in place February 2015. Are those improvements in place or are they yet to come?

A. When the company applied to renew their Site Specific Standard in 2015 they indicated that in order to further reduce emissions from coffining, they would have to concentrate on reducing the amount of iron to be coffined. The ministry continues to monitor the implementation of their iron reduction strategy.
