It’s not safe to avoid the sidewalk

The Hamilton Spectator - - OPINION - RE: Cycling in Hamilton

I picked up a copy of the Hamilton Bike Routes Map. One thing stood out: No Riding On Sidewalks!

I challenge those trying to do the right thing and ride instead of drive, to actually obey that bylaw.

I ride a lot and always follow the rules of the road. So far, no problems. Hamilton drivers are great. Really. But when traffic is crazy the sidewalk is the lesser of two evils. Hold up traffic and maybe get hit. Or get to where I need to be on a sidewalk almost no one is using, particularly on the Mountain.

The shoulders on too many of our bike routes are also a disaster. The cycling committee can’t have it both ways. If you encourage us to ride, repair the curb lanes and also allow sidewalk shared use. Rick Hunter-Wolff, cambridge
