Two dogs die in down­town blaze

Two dogs died and one per­son was taken to hos­pi­tal af­ter a fire broke out at a down­town build­ing Fri­day af­ter­noon.

A man was in­side the three-storey res­i­dence at Cannon Street West and Park Street North when the fire started around 2 p.m.

He was treated for mi­nor smoke in­hala­tion, said fire depart­ment spokesper­son Clau­dio Mostacci.

Five other peo­ple who were in­side the build­ing made it out safely, Mostacci said.

The fire caused about $300,000 in dam­age, he said.

The city’s build­ing depart­ment was called in to in­ves­ti­gate the struc­tural in­tegrity of the brick home, which had ex­ten­sive dam­age on the sec­ond and third floors. A neigh­bour­ing home to the south sus­tained mi­nor dam­age.

The cause was still un­der in­ves­ti­ga­tion Fri­day evening.

The Red Cross was called to help res­i­dents of 120 Park St. N. find al­ter­nate ac­co­mo­da­tion, Mostacci said.
