City should save Century Manor

The Hamilton Spectator - - OPINION -

RE: City mulls buying former hospital lands (May 16)

Another golden opportunity for Hamilton! We can buy the former Hamilton psychiatric hospital land on the west Mountain and be able to save the Century Manor Building.

Pat Saunders, fervent saviour of her beloved city’s heritage, has been striving for too many years to keep the wrecking ball away from this only Victorian structure on the site. Let’s hurry up and lay down our cash and restore Century Manor to its former pristine glory, and set it amid a beautiful park replete with greenery and peaceful pathways. If you are seeking a precedent, the city of Lincoln in England bought its deteriorating Victorian “lunatic asylum” and converted it into an entertainment complex complete with hotel, theatre, conservatory, museum and restaurants — thereby creating that city’s busiest tourist attraction next only to its magnificent medieval castle and cathedral.

And thank you Pat, for your vision, your tenacity — and your faith. Robert Nielsen, Stoney Creek
