The Top 10 coun­tries of per­se­cu­tion by num­ber of refugee claimants to Canada in 2016:

1. Nige­ria 1,565 2. China 1,330 3. Pak­istan 1,165 4. Turkey 1,106 5. Iraq 1,061 6. Syria 969 7. Hun­gary 957 8. Colom­bia 821 9. Eritrea 748 10. So­ma­lia 719

Some of the sur­pris­ing num­bers from 2016:

There were three peo­ple claim­ing they faced per­se­cu­tion in Fin­land, one from Australia, one from Den­mark, two from the Nether­lands and two from Switzer­land.

There were more peo­ple claim­ing they faced per­se­cu­tion in Swe­den (nine) or Nor­way (eight) — two of the world’s safest and most so­cially pro­gres­sive coun­tries — than from war-torn South Su­dan (seven).
