Man, 36, faces charges af­ter al­legedly ‘car­jack­ing’ taxi

A 36-year-old Hamil­ton man is fac­ing charges af­ter al­legedly be­ing caught try­ing to get into an am­bu­lance be­fore car­jack­ing a taxi.

The in­ci­dent be­gan around 7 a.m. Wed­nes­day at James Street North and King Street East and was re­ported to po­lice as a “car­jack­ing.”

Po­lice al­lege the man at­tempted to en­ter the am­bu­lance, but was turned away by paramedics. He then al­legedly ap­proached a taxi and de­manded the driver exit — the driver com­plied and the sus­pect drove off in the taxi. No one was in­jured and the sus­pect “made no threats of any vi­o­lence,” po­lice said.

Po­lice found the sus­pect at Robert Street and James Street North. The 36-year-old man, whose name has not yet been re­leased by po­lice, is charged with rob­bery, pos­ses­sion of stolen prop­erty over $5,000 and fail­ing to com­ply with pro­ba­tion.
