Small earthquake hits Port Colborne

The Hamilton Spectator - - LOCAL - NIAGARA THIS WEEK

If you heard a little rumbling Friday morning in Port Colborne, it wasn’t rolling thunder.

The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting a small earthquake occurred about nine kilometres west of the city.

The magnitude 2.1 event was considered minor. It occurred west-south-west of Port Colborne at 7:04 a.m.

A seismologist estimates the quake struck at a depth of three kilometres and was reported by at least one member of the public.

Earthquakes measuring 2.1 on the Richter scale are quite common, occurring nearly a million times a year.

Such events are often not even noticed and are often mistaken for other phenomena such as thunder.
