In a world of iPads, emojis and virtual reality, there is still a sizable contingent of people in love with the clattering of old typewriters. Those crazy for antique movable-type machines, including Tom Hanks and John Mayer, share their vintage love in the upcoming documentary California Typewriter (in New York and L.A. theatres Aug. 11), the trailer for which debuts exclusively at usatoday.com. Named for a famous Berkeley, Calif, typewriter shop, California Typewriter follows various stories of aficionados, some of whom create works of art from these increasingly obscure tools while others seek out the holy grail of their collection. Hanks cops to owning more than 250, “and I would say 90 per cent of them are in perfect working order.”
