Po­lice stand­off ends safely with man’s ar­rest

Hamil­ton po­lice safely con­vinced a 39-year-old man in cri­sis to put down his weapon early Tues­day, end­ing a more than two-hour stand­off that in­cluded a 37-year-old woman be­ing held hostage.

Po­lice con­firmed there were two chil­dren in the cen­tral Hamil­ton home, who were safely re­moved by po­lice.

No one was in­jured in the in­ci­dent on Madi­son Av­enue near Can­non Street East, which saw a sig­nif­i­cant po­lice pres­ence, in­clud­ing an ar­moured ve­hi­cle, ne­go­tia­tors and sev­eral cruis­ers.

Po­lice were called there around 11:30 p.m. Tues­day, with the man putting down his weapon around 2 a.m. He was ap­pre­hended by po­lice and taken to hos­pi­tal.

He is facing charges of as­sault with a weapon and forcible con­fine­ment.
