Dogs rescued from Louisiana shelter up for adoption here

A four-day Stoney Creek dog adoption event is aimed at finding homes for about 150 dogs, maybe more.

Many of the animals were brought up from a shelter in Bastrop, La., where they’d been kept, starving and too close together in cages, almost all of them bearing bite marks from the ceaseless fights.

A Welland animal care manager organized the trip down to Louisiana, with a team of SPCA workers and other animal care workers and volunteers from all over Ontario. They cleared out the American shelter that had been plagued by underfunding and understaffing.

The New Beginnings Pet Adoption Event, which starts Thursday and runs to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day, is at the PetSmart at 1779 Stone Church Rd. E. in Stoney Creek. Dogs cost $400 each to adopt; there’s an application process and a sleepover trial option.
