Canada doesn’t need more China

The Hamilton Spectator - - OPINION - RE: China’s abuses aren’t fake news (July 7)

Canada should not be expanding trade with China — there are no gains for us in this, only for China! The Chinese government controls its commerce and trade, the press and academia in that country. Their record on human abuses will never change and they clearly are not moving in a democratic direction any time soon. They are in control of all human activity from birth until death.

The Chinese government is only interested in our natural resources — that is, gaining ownership of them. We already import food of all kinds from them, with no guarantees of hygienic safety. This to the detriment of Canadian farmers and our own processing plants, these are fast disappearing and soon we will be unable to supply ourselves with homegrown foods from our own resources!

The Trudeau government should be exploring ways to disentangle itself from trade with China — the unintended consequences for Canada are huge. As well as loss of our farming industry, the loss of our manufacturing base — which has largely gone off shore some time ago. And loss of control of our natural resources with no gain for Canadians — only a gain for China! Susan A. Frandsen, Rockton
