Police urge caution after two cases of children falling from windows
Hamilton police want the public to make sure windows and screens are secure after responding to two incidents this week in which children fell from second-floor windows.
Both children, who were under five years old, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and are expected to make full recoveries, police say.
In both cases, the children were playing with other kids in rooms on the second floor when they fell through the screen, police said in a news release Friday. To prevent these types of falls, police offer the following safeguards:
keeping furniture away from windows;
installing window guards that can easily be opened by an older child or adult if there’s a fire;
installing window stops to prevent the windows from opening more than a few inches;
opening windows from the top, not the bottom, whenever possible;
regularly inspecting screens and windows to make sure they are working properly.
