Future weddings and other events booked at Sarcoa are being moved to other venues after a deal could not be reached between the Hamilton Waterfront Trust and the group that handled event bookings at the harbourfront space.

JEM Hospitality says it has worked out an arrangement with the Burlington Atrium, which will provide access to three other venues for people who already booked events.

“Our guests will have the choice of several wonderful options, not far from the Discovery Centre,” JEM’s Mike Attard said in an email.

The trust announced late Thursday that JEM declined their offer to use the Discovery Drive space previously occupied by the eatery for their already-booked events.

The location was being offered up for a “fee that was less than its costs,” according to the trust.

Attard said JEM had wanted to stay in the space but was looking for a long-term lease.

“Any arrangements would have required us to cancel most of our upcoming events,” he said.

The issue stems from the waterfront trust terminating Sarcoa’s 10year sublease last week for allegedly breaching its conditions and racking up hundreds of thousands of dollars in unpaid rent.

According to Attard, JEM had a “duly signed lease” with the restaurant, spelling out the terms of their activities and payment scheduled.

“We have been advised that although we always paid our rent to Sarcoa, it was not making its payments to the Waterfront Trust,” he said.
