SIU in­ves­ti­gat­ing death of man, 50, in po­lice cell

On­tario’s po­lice watch­dog is in­ves­ti­gat­ing the death of a 50-year-old man held at a po­lice sta­tion in Thun­der Bay, Ont., on Wed­nes­day. The Spe­cial In­ves­ti­ga­tions Unit says po­lice, along with paramedics, were called to an ad­dress on Fort Wil­liam Road just be­fore 8 p.m. about an in­di­vid­ual. In a news re­lease Thurs­day, the SIU says af­ter be­ing med­i­cally cleared by paramedics, the man was taken to a po­lice sta­tion where he was placed in a cell. The agency says that shortly af­ter mid­night, the man was found not breath­ing. Paramedics rushed him to hos­pi­tal where he was later pro­nounced dead.
