Editorial missed an important NAFTA point
RE: Why we need to care about NAFTA (July 18)
After reading The Spec’s view, in my opinion, it failed as it did not mention the most important clause in NAFTA: the Proportionality Clause.
Canada is obligated to make available 65-70 per cent of our domestic natural resources to the USA, counted as “domestic” is also what we import. For example, in 2011, Canada had to offer 73 per cent of its total domestic oil output to the U.S. I suggest every Canadian look up the Proportionality Clause. This is something we must demand be removed. Mexico said no back in 1994, here is what Mexico said, “Under no circumstances may foreigners acquire direct ownership of lands or waters.” We should follow Mexico’s lead.
