A relatively new Beamsville winery has been named winery of the year by the WineAlign National Wine Awards of Canada.

Redstone Winery, owned by Moray Tawse, was selected for the award by WineAlign’s rating website from more than 270 wineries across the country.

Redstone took 10 medals in the competition, with platinums going to the 2013 Limestone Riesling and 2013 Select Vineyards Chardonnay and golds to the 2013 Limestone Chardonnay, 2015 Sparkling Rose and 2013 Niagara Chardonnay.

Tawse purchased the 38-acre Lincoln lakeshore property at 4245 King St. in 2009, opening the Redstone Hospitality Centre in May 2015, with an 80-seat restaurant, private dining room and outdoor patio space that operates seven days a week.

Redstone winemaker Rene Van Ede said “freedom” was the secret to success.

“As a winemaker, many factors influence the quality of the wine,” he said.

“When making Redstone wines, I am not limited to a style or a terroir, so freedom to create a wine that is first and foremost tasty is always my goal.”
