Man injured, family cat perishes in east Mountain house fire early Monday
A fire on Hamilton Mountain early Monday sent one man to hospital with unknown injuries and caused about $60,000 in damage.
Firefighters were called to a house on East 26th Street near Concession Street at 3:23 a.m. after reports of fire in the basement.
Crews were met with smoke at the front door, said Fire Information Officer Claudio Mostacci.
The occupants in the home were already outside.
“We had the fire knocked down by 3:38,” Mostacci said, adding smoke-damaged furniture and other items from the home were pulled onto the front lawn to be monitored.
An adult male was taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.
One of the family’s two cats died in the fire. Firefighters safely removed the other one from inside.
The Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal has been notified.
The blaze was contained to the basement area of the house.
“There was substantial smoke damage throughout the house,” Mostacci said.
