Fourth per­son charged in homi­cide in­ves­ti­ga­tion

A fourth per­son has been charged in con­nec­tion with the dis­ap­pear­ance of Dou­glas Hill, a 48-year-old Six Na­tions man po­lice be­lieve was killed.

Ni­cholas Joel Ship­man, 34, of Oh­sweken, on Six Na­tions of the Grand River, was ar­rested Tues­day and charged with ac­ces­sory af­ter the fact to mur­der.

A 17-year-old girl, who can­not be named un­der the Youth Crim­i­nal Jus­tice Act, al­ready faces a charge of sec­ond­de­gree mur­der.

Two oth­ers also face charges of ac­ces­sory af­ter the fact: Holly Martin, 35, of Brant­ford, and Lori Anne Staats, 24, of Six Na­tions.

The charges come as OPP and Six Na­tions Po­lice con­tinue to search for Hill, last seen on Six Na­tions on June 24 at about 9 a.m.

“This is an ac­tive in­ves­ti­ga­tion and we will con­tinue to leave no stone un­turned,” said Six Na­tions Po­lice Chief Glenn Lick­ers. “Some­body knows where he is lo­cated and we need them to have the courage to con­tact us.”

Po­lice have also been look­ing for a dark-coloured SUV with tinted win­dows and pos­si­ble front-end dam­age that may be con­nected to the case. The ve­hi­cle was seen the day of Hill’s dis­ap­pear­ance in the area of Suther­land Road, also known as Chippewa Road or Side Road 8, on the Chippewa of the Thames First Na­tion.

The ve­hi­cle may have also trav­elled through Muncey, Ont., or Oneida First Na­tions.

Hill is de­scribed as an In­dige­nous man, five-foot-five, about 167 pounds, with a thin build, long dark hair in a pony­tail, and a vis­i­ble tat­too of a feather on his right cheek. He is known to wear pre­scrip­tion sun­glasses and has fa­cial hair.

Ship­man has a his­tory with Six Na­tions Po­lice, hav­ing been charged in 2014 with at­tempted mur­der in re­la­tion to a stab­bing.

Ac­cord­ing to the Brant­ford Ex­pos­i­tor, Ship­man evaded po­lice for more than a year be­fore be­ing caught when he was in a car crash in Brant­ford in Septem­ber 2015. He pleaded guilty to ag­gra­vated as­sault and was sen­tenced in De­cem­ber to time served af­ter spend­ing more than 13 months in jail.

Ship­man is sched­uled to ap­pear in Brant­ford court at a later date.
