Safety first on the water
The Hamilton police marine unit will be patrolling the bay this civic holiday long weekend, seeking compliance with regulations around required safety equipment on boats and zero consumption of alcohol while boats are underway.
Boaters can only consume alcohol when tied up to a dock, and if the boats have a galley and some sort of washroom.
Hamilton police saw a 53 per cent increase in search and rescue calls last month. There has been one boating related drowning this year.
