Province to blame for rising property thefts

The Hamilton Spectator - - OPINION -

RE: Make sure to lock down your property (July 24)

To the writer who suffered the theft of her camera from her car. All I can say is that you and the rest of the citizens of this city, and the province for that matter, might as well get used to this kind of thing happening more often since the provincial government has muzzled police officers ability to investigate individuals such as the one who stole your camera.

Prior to this year, officers patrolling neighbourhoods could stop and question “suspicious looking” people and card them for future reference so that if more thefts continued to happen in this area and this individual (who didn’t reside there) was stopped and questioned on a number of occasions, police would have a possible lead as to who was responsible. But as of this year officers are required to ask permission to engage such a person in a conversation, and if that individual refuses to speak to that officer, that’s the extent of it. And, you can bet that anyone up to no good would exercise that right! Michael Csoke, Mount Hope
