Foster the rescue dog comes here from Taiwan — and flees
Rescue dog Foster came a long way from the streets of Taiwan to safety here in April, but now he’s lost.
Foster, a three-year-old Australian cattle dog mix, went missing last Sunday at 4 p.m. after Gila Pyke, his new foster volunteer drove him to her place when a Kitchener family had to return him because he needed a quieter home.
When Pyke opened the car door to get him, Foster bolted down the street and has been missing ever since — although he has been spotted several times.
“We know where he is,” says Pyke. “He’s at the King’s Forest Golf Course on Greenhill. He is definitely nesting there.”
A core group of 16 people has been trying to lure him to them, some staying up all night. Traps with enticing food have been set up, but so far they’ve caught only a possum, says Sundee Himburg, co-founder of Hammer City Paws Rescue.
The group works with a rescue outfit in Taiwan to bring in rehabilitated street dogs and adopt them out.
“He’s quite young and energetic, but very shy, and skittish of people” says Himburg of Foster, who was sent to Canada in April.
The rescuers had Foster in sight during a recent nighttime stakeout, but he ran off when he was spooked by a person running across the road at him.
Himburg and Pyke are asking the public to keep an eye out for Foster. But if you see him just call in the sighting.
“Please don’t chase him,” says Himburg. Or call him, she adds.
“He’s relatively safe in the area he’s hiding out in and we want to avoid pushing him into areas with more motor vehicle traffic.”
Pyke says any sighting called in would be very helpful to tracking Foster’s movements. “We just need folks to be our eyes.”
Foster is 40 pounds, medium height and build and has mottled black and white fur with solid black patches on his back, face and ears. He is wearing a bright yellow collar and bright orange rope leash, still attached.
