Addison, Foote lead Canada past Finland
BRATISLAVA, SLOVAKIA — Calen Addison and Nolan Foote had power-play goals in the second period as Canada earned its first win of the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup on Tuesday with a 5-1 victory over Finland.
Jack McBain, on the power play, Benoit-Olivier Groulx and Gabriel Fortier supplied the rest of the offence for the Canadians (1-0-1). Ryan Merkley, Barrett Hayton and Joe Veleno all tacked on two assists apiece.
Finland’s Matias Maccelli broke Olivier Rodrigue’s shutout bid at 18:19 of the third period.
Rodrigue finished with 13 saves for the win in net. Justus Annunen turned away 24-of-29 shots in defeat. Canada was 3 for 7 on the power play. The Canadians continue preliminary round play on Wednesday against Slovakia. Canada has won gold 20 times in 25 years in the under-18 competition.
